Rekluse EXP 4.0 / Auto-Clutch Comes To The DR650! - Adventure Rider

Rekluse now offers an auto-clutch, available through ProCycle, for the DR650.

Seems like it was only yesterday we were telling you about KTM’s new auto-shifting gearbox for its new adventure bike—waitaminnit, it was only yesterday (see it here). Now, we also see an auto-clutch system available for the Suzuki DR650!

Logging on to the ProCycle.us website, you can now find a listing for a Rekluse EXP 4.0 Auto Clutch kit for the Suzuki DR650. It offers twist-and-go riding for DR riders, with the ability to use the clutch lever as well—but it’s not needed, not even for stops and starts.

Remember that Rekluse sells clutch replacement kits for a wide range of motorcycles; this isn’t something specifically built from the scratch for the DR. It’s an adaptation of a standard design and the ProCycle site doesn’t have many model-specific details. But it does tell us that you can still use your lever to clutch-up for wheelies and lightening the front end for off-road riding. Rekluse says they went to great pains to make this system feel like a stock clutch lever—but now, you don’t have to worry about stalling the bike.

This latest Rekluse design is supposed to be smoother than their previous versions, with fast hook-up and an improved feel of connection to the engine. See their marketing video below:

The design may be improved, but it looks like it’s the same basic idea that this style of auto-clutch has relied on for years: A thick friction disc is centrifugally actuated, engaging the clutch without input from the lever. Remember Honda’s old ATC-series three-wheelers? It’s kind of the same idea, very roughly speaking. Those three-wheeler designs came out 40+ years ago, and Rekluse has been refining their own design for a long time now.

There are no electronics involved, which is a good thing, considering the DR’s wimpy charging system and general electro-mechanical simplicity.

Procycle wants $749.99 for the Rekluse DR650 swap-in pack. See more info here. It’s also available from larger outlets like Revzilla as well as Rekluse themselves.
